Rio de Janeiro is the largest international tourist destination of Brazil, of Latin
America and of the Southern Hemisphere, beeing the Brazilian city most popular over
the world. It's the second largest metropolis in Brazil (after Sao Paulo), the sixth largest
in America and thirty fifth in the world. It is affectionately called Marvelous City and
the ones who is born in Rio are called carioca.
It is one of the major economic, cultural and financial centers of the country, beeing
internationally known because of yours several cultural and landscape icons, including:
Sugar Loaf, Corcovado Mountain (with the statue of Cristo Redentor), the beaches of
Copacabana, Ipanema and Barra da Tijuca neighborhoods, the Maracanã stadium, the
bohemian neighborhood of Lapa and their arches, among others.
Christ the Redeemer: Is a statue portraying Jesus Christ, located on top of Corcovado
Mountain, 709 meters above sea level, in the Tijuca National Park, overlooking most of
the city of Rio de Janeiro. In 2007 he was elected informally as one of the new seven
wonders of the world. In 2012, UNESCO considered the Cristo Redentor as part of the
landscape of Rio de Janeiro included in the Humanity Patrimony list. It is made of
concrete and soapstone, has thirty meters tall, not counting the eight meters from the
pedestal, and its arms stretch for 28 meters wide.
Sugar Loaf: It is a complex of hills located in Urca, composed of Sugar Loaf hill, Urca hill and Babylon hill. Bordered by the Guanabara Bay waters, constitutes an international tourist reference for the city. It has as an additional attraction: the cable car ride, linking the Praia Vermelha and the Urca hill to Sugar Loaf. Known as Sugarloaf Cable Car, the cable car was designed in 1908 and opened in 1912, becoming the first lift installed in the country and the third in the world. In over ninety years of existence, it has transported more than thirty million people. In the
